Bethany Christian School
About BCS
Bethany Christian School began in 1981 as a ministry of Bethany Baptist Church, and offers K4 through 8th grade educational instruction. BCS maintains high academic standards in a loving, structured environment where the faculty and staff desire for every student to receive personal attention and a quality education from qualified Christian teachers in an atmosphere of discipleship.
BCS uses a variety of Christian academic curricula to educate students through the lens of a Biblical world view. With a small teacher-to-student ratio, our traditional classrooms are taught by loving teachers who pray for their students regularly. Students are encouraged to grow academically, spiritually, and socially in a safe environment.
Mission
Bethany Christian School seeks to partner with parents to develop a child’s academic, spiritual, and social potential by guiding them through a comprehensive, Bible-based education designed to produce Godly young people who are equipped for life and eternity.
Admission
Prospective students are admitted to BCS on the basis of academic record, entrance tests, and an interview with the parent(s) and school administrator.
K5 students must be five years old by September 1 to enroll in BCS. K4 students must be four years old by September 1st.

A copy of a student’s birth certificate, recent physical examination, and up-to-date immunization records are required for admission.
If a student is transferring from another school a request for records form must be completed.
If you would like more information or are interested in enrollment for your child, contact the BCS office for an appointment or interview.
Our Staff
MORGAN BENTON
Administrative Assistant
My name is Morgan and I’m the school’s new Administrative Assistant! I’m originally from North Carolina but I’ve also lived in Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. I’ve served at The Wilds Christian Camp the past two years and I’m thankful for the experiences and growth I have gained there.
ABIGAIL FRANCES
5TH Grade Teacher
My name is Abigail, and I’m excited to be teaching at Bethany Christian School this year. My favorite hobbies are hiking and fellowshipping with other people. Since I was 10 years old, my family and I have gone on vacation in the Brevard area. Since then, I would pray that someday I could live in this area. God gave me that desire of my heart when He called me to teach at BCS!
I have a degree in elementary/ early childhood education, and enjoy sharing God’s love with students and nurturing them to be the people God wants them to be.
A fun fact about me is that I have a twin sister!
SAVANNAH JOWERS
1ST & 2ND Grade Teacher
My name is Savannah, and this is my first year teaching at Bethany Christian School. Ever since I was a teenager, God has given me a joy and passion to work with children. I want to help them grow more in their knowledge of Him and the truths He has revealed to us in His Word. I love getting to see their faces light up when they learn something new! I enjoy reading and spending time outdoors with my husband.
One of my favorite verses is Psalm 118:24, “This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” This verse is a wonderful reminder that we can go through our days with joy because God is in control of the day He has given us, and that joyful appreciation for each day is something I want to teach my students as well!
DENISE SHOTWELL
Facilities Manager/Teacher Assistant
My name is Denise, and I’ve served at Bethany for 21 years, including the last seven with my husband, Mike. I wear many hats here, but my unofficial job title is Facility Manager. I love working with children and enjoy the many opportunities here to love, serve, and disciple them in concrete ways. Spending time with family brings me great joy, as well as reading. A favorite verse is Psalm 18:2, which reminds me that I am anchored in the protection and deliverance only He can offer.
MIKE SHOTWELL
7TH & 8TH Grade Teacher
My name is Mike and I’m a native North Carolinian and love calling Brevard my home. Denise and I have lived here for all but one year of our marriage. This school year is my eighth teaching here at Bethany Christian School. I’m a retired (sometimes just tired) public school teacher and coach. I’m thoroughly enjoying teaching here for many reasons, one of which is the opportunity to serve my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Another reason is being able to interact daily with all of the grades from kindergarten to high school – but I love my seventh and eighth grades most though! I like to hike and or drive around these beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. My favorite verse Matthew 19: 13-15 is a part of what drives me to do this job.
CHRISTY TAYLOR
High School Facilitator
My name is Christy Taylor. In 2023, after being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years, God clearly directed me to accept the position of High School Facilitator at BCS. Ever since I was a teenager myself, I have had a burden for teens and a desire to see them grow closer to Christ during this transformative time in their lives. I am thoroughly enjoying the daily opportunities to help them academically and spiritually in our unique classroom setting! Outside of the classroom, I enjoy serving in the music and counseling ministry at the Wilds, ministering in various ways at Bethany Baptist Church, baking, listening to audiobooks, and spending time with my husband and three sons.
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Acts 20:24 because of the reminder not to get caught up in seeing my life as my own. I desire to be busy doing God’s work so that I might “finish my course with joy.”
LYNN TAYLOR
K4/5 Teacher & School Administrator
My name is Lynn, and I’ve been the Kindergarten teacher here at Bethany for 12 years! I’m also in my seventh year serving as the BCS Administrator. I love teaching Kinders how to read and about Jesus. In my Administrative capacity, I love being able to see growth in their love and knowledge of Jesus as they continue on at Bethany. My husband Jim and I are “foodies”, so we love finding new restaurants to enjoy. We also love traveling and spending time with our two grown children, their spouses, and our six grandchildren. My favorite verses concerning teaching are Titus 2:7-8 because they remind me of my responsibility in living a pure life that will glorify God and that the things I teach will be beyond reproach.
MELISSA WALTERS
6TH Grade Teacher
I’m Melissa and this is my second year at Bethany Christian School! As a pastor’s wife I’m enjoying adding another aspect to my ministry by teaching in a Christian environment. I truly enjoy being around my fifth and sixth graders, the challenge of each day, and pouring into the students’ spiritual lives with the truth of God’s Word found in our curriculum. I was born and raised in Henderson County, where my parents still reside, and enjoy spending time at their house when possible – and especially enjoy my mom’s wonderful home cooking! My favorite Bible verse is Exodus 14:14 because I know that as God was faithful then, He is faithful now. In any battle I face, the Lord will fight for me. I am thankful most of all for Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and for the forgiveness of sin.
DELANEY WILSON
3RD & 4TH Grade Teacher
My name is Delaney and I have been a teacher at Bethany for four years. I have a passion for helping children learn and grow educationally and spiritually, counseling opportunities with students, and being out in the community. I enjoy reading and spending time in the beautiful Western North Carolina mountains with my family. My favorite verse is 2 Corinthians 12:9 because no matter the circumstance God’s grace is always sufficient.
