Who is Christ?

The Holy Scriptures are God’s words to humanity. In the Bible, God tells us about himself. As a person reads the Bible, they discover that God is the greatest Being in the universe. He is all-powerful; He is everywhere; He knows everything. He is holy (unique), good, wise, and just. While the Bible shows us that there is only one God, it also communicates that there are three Persons in this one Godhead. This is the mystery called the Trinity. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The second Person, the Son, reveals God to humans. He shows us what God is like, for He is God. While He never had a beginning, this eternal Son came to earth as a human. He was born from the virgin Mary and was named Jesus. This historical man who walked on our planet and interacted with us accomplished God’s rescue plan for humanity. Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah; He is God’s chosen and anointed King. He rules over everything, and He is coming back to earth as the Judge of all humanity.

What has He done?

God created our human race along with everything in the universe. But the first humans, Adam and Eve, decided that they knew better than God. They decided to disobey God’s good command to them. Ever since then, every human has been born as a rebel against God. We have the same DNA as our first parents. We decide that we know better than God, and we disobey God’s good commands to us. This is called sin.

Because of our sin, every human deserves God’s judgment and condemnation. The first consequence for our sin is that we die. The final consequence is that we are separated from God’s good presence in never-ending punishment. This is terrible news. But God is so rich in kindness that He provided a rescue plan for humanity. He sent His Son to earth as a man. Jesus was born from a virgin so that He was never tainted with Adam’s sin. Jesus always obeyed God perfectly, so He did not deserve to die. Yet He willingly laid down His life on the cross to die the death we should have died and to suffer the judgment of God we should have suffered. Jesus was buried, indicating that He really did die. But He rose from the dead on the third day after His crucifixion. His resurrection displays His powerful victory over sin and death and hell. Jesus ascended into heaven and was exalted by God at His right hand as the eternal Ruler of the universe.

Why does it matter for you?

The first-century followers of Jesus went everywhere telling this good news – this Gospel. They called people to turn from their disobedience, to believe that Jesus suffered in their place, and to confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and King.

Every person, then, must decide what they will do with Jesus. He declared, “Whoever comes to me I will never cast out” (John 6:37). Either you receive Him, or you reject Him. There is no in-between. Terrible judgment awaits those who reject Him, but glorious life is given to those who come to Him.

This is the Christ we love. This is the Christ we worship. This is the Christ we proclaim.

Will you believe that He died to suffer in your place? Will you declare that He rose from the tomb to conquer death for you? Will you submit to Him as your King?
